This is the first of Jilly Cooper's blockbusters, and, I think, easily the best (although I did love Rivals, too!) Although it's tosh, it's well-written tosh. A really cracking story, introducing us to uber-cad Rupert Campbell-Black and gipsy boy Jake Lovell (who handles a horse as effortlessly as he handles a woman). O still, my beating heart.
Sadly, after Riders and Rivals, Jilly Cooper's books go successively downhill, with far too many characters - most of whom are silly caricatures - recycled puns, and pointless, rambling, improbable plots. OK, Riders is improbable (especially the bit where Macaulay attacks Rupert), but it's such a good read, I can forgive that.
I think I'll release this in Gloucestershire, where the main action is set.
