Joseph and Celice are married zoologists who decide to take the day off and visit the shoreline where they met and fell in love many years ago. While they are at the shore they are murdered.

The story deals with what happens to their bodies from the moment of the attacks until they are discovered days later as well as how they came to be there on that day. They cheat old age, lonliness, failing health etc because they died together at this time of their lives.

Interesting book, but the whole thing about Mondazy's fish drove me crazy until I was almost finished the book - then I got it.....Jim Crace has a huge imagination and he will make up many things and present them as fact.

"There can be nothing lonlier than to outlive someone you are used to loving."
