Who ( of the german children ) does not know the stories of Max and Maurice?!
But who´s read them in english already?
I discovered this wonderfully book at ebay and did not shun costs and efforts to buy it for bookcrossing ;-)
It´s just brilliant, how the translator, Walter Roome, was able to bring over the spirit of Wilhelm Busch and keep the authenticity of the rhymes.

Eine kleine Kostprobe - a little sample:

Oh, what do we hear and read
often as a wicked breed
as for instance all those stories
of these boys called Max and Maurice
who not only less than naught
thought of wisdom they were taught
and so made no run of it
but made even fun of it.
Yea, for trickery and pranks
they were always ready, thanks!
Vexing humans, chasing beasts,
stealing fruit for secret feasts,
playing evil tricks and teasing
is, of course, by far more pleasing
than to sit with other boys
still in school and make no noise. -
But o dear, o dear, o dear,
what a dreadful end is near!
Max and Maurice, oh, what fate
did you boys have to await!
So, recorded are their crimes
here in pictures and in rhymes.

Eine tolle Leseerfahrung!
A magnificent reading experience!

Ooops!

The book came with today's mail.

Sorry about the massive delay! I kept forgetting to make a journal entry and to send the book on.

I thought it was really funny though it can't match the original version. I'm now looking forward to reading the Latin translation (another bookring) although I won't be able to read it as easily as this one. ;-)

The book is now travelling to hank-chinaski since Maresa asked to be skipped.

Came with the mail yesterday - and already finished! Walter Roome sure did a great job translating this famous story while preserving much of the original's style and melody. As a reminder of the fun I had reading the book, I keep a sample of the tailor prank:

Suits for weekdays, Sunday-bests,
modern trousers, coloured vests,
padded overcoats and spats,
all the trimmings for your hats,
various other garments too -
all this Master Trife could do.
Or repairing, mending, strengthening
or some shortening or lengthening
or, let's say, some buttons were
lost or loosened here or there, -
how and where, front or behind,
whatsoever, never mind -
all was done by tailor Trife,
for this was his aim in life.

I'm now gonna let my old man have a look at it and then send it on after Christmas.

I had a good time reading this book. The translation was very good (also funny)and I enjoyed comparing german to english parts.
Thanks a lot to Catbook for this bookring.7

Nice and witty - I like Widow Minion especially! By the way - I expect you noticed the secret message left in the book (pencil marks)? Who did it?
The book is reserved while I wait for bluodzibluoda's pm.

Wirklich witzig!

Journal Entry 15 by wingCaptainCarrotwing from Dortmund, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Friday, January 20, 2006
