Reta's 19-year-old daughter Norah has left university and is spending her days sitting on a Toronto street corner with a sign that says GOODNESS. Reta must continue on with her life but she is struggling to cope and understand why her daughter is doing this.

Another good one by Carold Shields. I was reading, waiting for the story to start, when I realized I was already a quarter the way through the book. Carol Shields is excellent at being subtle, taking about the ordinary life and making you think.

This story also gives some insight into the process of writing a novel - very interesting.

"This is why I read novels - so I can escape my own unrelenting monologue."
(this is a quote from the book but I'm sure it applies to many of us)

July 17/05 - This book is being saved for cestmoi who finds herself almost Bookless in Toronto.
July 23/05 - Gave to cestmoi today.

My friends always come through with good books for me to read :) I have read other Sheilds novel and enjoyed them so I'm sure this is a good choice for me. I will journal again soon.

It was great to see you all again today and I will send the pics as soon as I've downloaded them.

I think Carol Shields is my favourite Canadian author. Her novels always touch my heart and make me think. I completley agree with you Sue, her stories never seem to take off..they just are and before you know you it, you are part of the character's lives - right there with them.

This novel reminded me alot of The Stone Diaries, because we only see Reta's feelings and thoughts in relation to how she feels about other people, her publisher, her husband, her mother in law, her daughters, her friends...she never reveals her thoughts or feelings directly.

Carol Shields is truly a master at getting to the heart of women's feelings.
