Hardcover - 1990
This book tells the story of how Americans thought and worried about the English language from 1776 to the early 1900s. The book was the winner of the 1986 Allan Nevins Prize (Society of American Historians).
The only fault I find with this book is that it is slow reading and quite dry. (I highly recommend a nice zinfandel to moisten it up.)
