Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors.
From the backcover:
"Shadow is a man with a past. But now he wants nothing more than to live a quiet life with his wife and stay out of trouble. Until he learns that she's been killed in a terrible accident.
Flying home for the funeral, as a violent storm rocks the plane, a strange man in the seat next to him introduces himself. The man calls himself Mr. Wednesday, and he knows more about Shadow than is possible.
He warns Shadow that a far bigger storm is coming. And from that moment on, nothing will ever be the same..."

An amazing book! I stayed up last night until late to finish it. Myth blends so well with the modern world and Gaiman's writing is always beautiful and insightful. A great read!
The plot and the characters are interesting and exciting but the story has a tendency to ramble and sometimes gets confused along the way. However the the story combines fantasy and mundane life well giving the characters a 3-dimentional quality considering the blend of mythology, legend and fantasy within the tale. I really loved the wealth of information about muthology and I had fun figuring out the various plot twists within the book. The book is 588 pages long yet I finished it in 2 and a half days so it is a pretty good book to read.

I knew Neil Gaiman from his works in comics, where he is considered among the best writers.
His work Sandman has a huge fanbase and gave comics some very mature tales.
Through BookCrossing and deadendmind I found out about his books and wanted to read some. After reading Stardust I came across this book at our Convention and grabbed it from dem!
Thanks dem, you're the best!

The story was very nice with good plot twists and numerous interesting facts. It reminds me of road movies and american epics, but better in quality.
Although I like Neil's stories, his books give me the sensation that they are not complete, he leaves the reader with many questions concerning the plot and the characters. In a way he lets us fill in the gaps with our own imagination. I'm not sure yet if I like that or not.

I wanted to add a personal note to this entry.
I'm currently (11/2006) serving in the army. I started reading this book almost 2 months ago. Last month I broke my leg and had to stay in hospital for a day. On that day, during visiting hours, my girlfriend came and told me to break up.
Being alone, with a broken leg in a military hospital, with no-one to talk to, I only had this book to keep my mind off my broken heart, only this story to stop me from crying. Until that time I had read 67 pages. The following morning I was on page 267. And everytime I was feeling lonely, this book swept me away and I lived Shadow's problems and sorrows, not mine.
Thank you Deadendmind, your book drove my mind away from a deadend.
