Journal Entry 1 by MaxCastle from Manchester, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Saturday, June 18, 2005
Coe's wonderful novel about growing up in Birmingham in the 1970s is a treat to read - hilarious, tragic, witty, moving, politically engaged, satirical, childish, cruel, lovable and exhilarating. Oh, and horribly, painfully nostalgic for those of us of a certain age.

Journal Entry 3 by jehanine from Manchester, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Saturday, June 18, 2005
I suppose it could be worse. Sure, it's fatuous, clichéd, dull, and the prose is incredibly irritating considering how simple it is, but I'm sure it could be worse. Actually no it couldn't. I didn't finish it, obviously, as I had some paint drying somewhere and watching it seemed a more intelligent and constructive way of spending my time than reading this sub-Stephen-Fry drivel. I kept flicking through to see if the first section had been some sort of stylised parody of stupid books, but it was all like that. I really, really hate this. I'd like to bin it or burn it, but I shouldn't, so I'll release it, I suppose. Awful, really awful. Oh, and despite being the right age, the nostalgia failed to kick in at all. Don't bother, is my advice.
