Other Powers -- Scandalous Victoria Woodhull

Athur Schlesinger, Jr., summed up this book so: "This fascinating story of a remarkable woman illuminates the vagaries of religion, sex, finance, feminism, and publicity in Victorian America." Couldn't do better myself. Now that America is going through its fourth "Great Awakening" religious revival furor, it's a fine time to look at how women fared in the Civil War era and beyond, as compared to today. Be prepared to hear a lot of bad news about hypocritical religious leaders using fear and bigotry to keep women from full equality and productive participation in US democracy. Goldsmith, a highly readable social historian, wrote LITTLE GLORIA: HAPPY AT LAST, which was made into a film for TV.
