Amazon.co.uk Review
What on earth is Bill Bryson doing writing a book of popular science--A Short History of Almost Everything? Largely, it appears, because this inquisitive, much-travelled writer realised, while flying over the Pacific, that he was entirely ignorant of the processes that created, populated and continue to maintain the vast body of water beneath him.

Edit 16th August 2005:
I loved this book. Finally someone who can explain things the way that even I understand.
As the book is in English I got lost a few times, scienctific words in English aren't my strongest side but on the whole a really great read! If my science books in school had been written like this one, I would have actually paid attention!

You would never believe how interesting science can be. I really liked this book and while reading I noticed many times that my brain was nearly overloading with so many thoughts this book provoked. And if you thought that scientist are dull and boring guys hiding in their chambers - guess again (not that there would be those too but there are also a lot of scientists who are pretty excentric).

"When you consider it from a human perspective, and clearly it would be difficult for us to do otherwise, life is an odd thing. It couldn't wait to get going, but then, having got going, it seemed in very little hurry to move on."

Sorry to say this... but Bryson loses first round to some of the more brilliant quests for encyclopedic coverage. This big puff of a book was all about high school science, processed by the Bryson brain and delivered to us in a format that feasts on jocular platitudes and numerical details bordering on nonsense. True, a number of ideas and imagery included were catching to say the least, but ultimately I was put off by the excess of popularization. Also, the selection of fields, branches, and scientists seemed quite haphazard - maybe the author was deliberately making room for a sequel?

[20/10/05] I passed the book on to Kettricken & expect it to pop up somewhere in Southampton, England!

Got this from CatharinaL while visiting Tampere. I've heard so much about this book it so I'm quite curious to see if it really is as good as (almost) everybody say.
