I really wanted to enjoy this book more than I did. I fear Josie Lloyd's fluffy styleis started to overshadow Emlyn Rees' darker, more dramatic writing, because even though you can still tell which ideas and sections of writing are his, they've been softened an awful lot. There is nothing soft about the effects of a flood, don't try to protect us so much!

Despite that, the flood story was the strong point here. Maybe it's because my home town was hit by flash flooding in January, but this bit of the story really drew me in.
However... yet again with the flat characters, the ones incapable of feeling more than one emotion, just in case we start feeling sympathy for them and are horrified when bad things happen to them. Bill and Rachel's mum could have been given a little more depth of character - while her background was explained perfectly well, her character in the present was woefully unrounded. I admit I was still shocked by what happened to her, but it would have been a lot more effective had she been allowed to be anything other than a harridan.

The contemporary storyline was a little too reliant on coincidence for me as well - and I'm not at all satisifed with how it all worked out.

A poor effort, overall, from a partnership I've always been eager to read before. I hope they're back on form with the next offering.

I picked this up at the BCUK Unconvention in Birmingham. I've read and enjoyed Come Together and The Boy Next Door, so grabbed this in anticipation that it's equally as good.

A change from the previous boy/girl chick lit - this one's more a historical novel. I enjoyed it, but not enough to read again.
