This book is historical fiction about the history of Afghanistan from before the Taliban through to today. Its a great story about a families journey.

Thanks to the generous HopKnot for sending this as part of a trade. Just got back from a trip and found this among the accumulated mail that piled up while I was gone. I eagerly look forward to reading this - I read wonderful things about it on the BookCrossing forums. I promise to journal again after reading and will find it a new reader at that time.

Let me start out by saying that I rarely read a BookCrossing trade book immediately upon receiving it in the mail. This book was far too tempting to put aside for one of the many on my TBR shelves. I went into it not knowing very much about it, just that it was about life in Afghanistan from before the Taliban through today. So, it was a very good story that was well-presented and I found it very hard to put the book down. However, it was so sad (I did not expect this) and it will stay with me for a long time. (A sign of an excellent book, I think.) Redemption was a theme throughout the book and the fact that not doing the "right" thing at the moment required can have far-flung repercussions into the future.

This book is highly recommended for a reader who does not mind a story that requires you to think and ponder it's lessons.

Mailed to "guinaveve" in a controlled-release trade. Mailed July 1st, '06.

Journal Entry 6 by guinaveve from Mason, Ohio USA on Wednesday, July 5, 2006
Thanks for sending me this. I have read it before. Here is my review which I wrote for the other copy.
Wow! What can I say about this book to describe how wonderful and emotional provocative it is? It is a great story, the characters are well developed, and I was very caught up in the book. Some of it is hard to read, because many of the side events are based on things that really happen, but it was fascinating none the less.
I did think that some of the coincidences that occured regarding the characters made the story a bit far-fetched at times, but it is still one of the best books I have read this year.
This book is one I know I will end up buying a few copies of to give to friends and family who like to read.

I wanted this copy to pass on to someone else who I think will enjoy it.

Guinaveve left this one for me at work today (I was super excited!). This is actually on an extra credit reading list for one of my classes, so as well as getting the fun of catching a book, I also get the extra points. =)

I'm currently reading J.M. Barrie and the Lost Boys, but this one is going to be next! (I hope to read it superfast and pass it on while I'm in TN this weekend, but that may not happen)

This book was so depressing, but such a good read! And I was pleased with the ending.
