From back cover:

At thirty-six, Quoyle, a third-rate newspaperman, is wrenched violently out of his workaday life when his two-timing wife meets her just deserts. He retreats with his two daughters to his ancestral home on the starkly beautiful Newfoundland coast, where a rich cast of local characters all play a part in Quoyle's struggle to reclaim his life. As three generations of his family cobble up new lives. Quoyle confronted his private demons -and the unpredictable forces of nature and society - and begins to see the possibility of love withiut pain or misery.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

It took awhile to get used to sentences without verbs but the cadence soon became that of the "Newfi" characters. I could have lived without learning the million ways to serve seafood, including (UCK!) squidburgers, but it did add to the picture of the harsh lifestyle in the coastal fishing towns. The editing of the newspaper articles added some necessary humor. The real life look at love in its many permutations made this a realistic yet magical book.
Plan to include it in the "random book" box I am expecting soon.

I wanted to like this book, so much so that I went way past my "50 page rule". I just couldn't get it into. It's weird because I absolutely loved the movie. I made it to page 110 and stopped. :( I'm glad I got a chance to read it, although I just couldn't finish it. This is only maybe the 4th book I've ever not finished.

Arrived safely this weekend. Thanks a lot for this! I'm looking forward to reading it.

UPDATE 14th March 2006

Finally got round to pulling this down from Mount TBR. Took me a while to get into the rhythm of the language, but once I did I really enjoyed the vivid portrait of people and place that this conjured up. I'm really glad that I haven't seen the film, as it might have created preconceived ideas about how the characters should look etc - though I intend to see it now that I've read the book.

18th March 2006 - To be released in London sometime over the weekend.
