The lyrical an resonant To the Lighthouse focuses on the sensations and experiences of a group of holiday-makers on Skye.

This novel is an extraordinarily poignant evocation of a lost happiness that lives on in the memory. For years now the Ramsays have spent every summer in their holiday home in Scotland, and they expect these summers will go on forever. In this, her most autobiographical novel, Virginia Woolf captures the intensity of childhood longing and delight, and the shifting complexity of adult relationships. From an acute awareness of transcience, she creates an enduring work of art.

The most autobiographical of Virginia Woolf's work, "To the Lighthouse" is based on her own childhood experiences, and while it touches on childhood and children's perceptions and desires, it also explores adult relationships, marriage and the changing class structure of its time.

I attempted to read this book once, when I was still struggling with my understanding of difficult english words, so I gave up after a while. I will resume my reading at a later date, because I was enjoying the story, despite my problems understanding some words.

What a struggle. Not at all an enjoyable read. But Virginia Woolf surely must win the award for the longest ever sentences!
