Journal Entry 1 by AngelChild from Maidstone, Kent United Kingdom on Monday, May 30, 2005
At the end of the nineteenth century a most unusual woman lives in Gap Creek, isolated in the Appalachian high country. Julie Harmon works hard, 'hard as a man', they say. So hard that at times she's not sure if she can stop. People depend on her. They need her to cut the wood, to slaughter the hogs. To nurse the dying. She is just a teenager when her brother dies in her arms, the same year that she marries Hank and moves down into the valley. And in the first year of their marriage, Julie and Hand discover that the modern world is more complex than they could have imagined, and to survive they must find out whether love can keep chaos and madness at bay. With great dignity and clarity, award-winning novelist Robert Morgan proves again his ability to create unforgettable heroines. In Gap Creek he writes with great feeling - but no sentimentality - about a way of life a world away from ours.

Good book, really enjoyed it, I found it a bit different from the books I'd been reading. Julie was such a strong person even with all the things she had to go through.
Passing this on to Purplerosebud to put with all her other rings to read.

Now with me, thanks for passing it on. I didn't run out of things to read (lol) so I was happy to wait my turn. I have a couple of books to read in front of this but from reading the journals I am intrigued and hope to get to it soon.

What a great book! I found it really absorbing. Following the lives of the young couple in their first year of marriage with all that life could throw at them. What a strong character Julie was to trying hard to keep going against all odds. They managed to make so much out of so little. It really made me think about our lives now and how much we take for granted.

Many thanks to caffcaff and nocton4 for sending this book out to travel. There are now a few more people wanting to join in this ray and I will add any more who come later

I loved this book. It is a gritty, realistic, and touching, look at the relationship between a young couple set as they struggle against adversity.Despite Julie's strength of character there was a vulnerability to her that made me care about what happened to her and her family.
