Second in a five-volume series of time travel, adventure & romance books, first being "Outlander" (Cross Stitch, UK)

Synopsis
"For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to the majesty of Scotland's mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones, about a love that transcends the boundaries of time, and about James Fraser, a warrior whose gallantry once drew the young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his...Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful daughter as Claire's spellbinding journey continues in the intrigue-ridden court of Charles Edward Stuart, in a race to thwart a doomed uprising, and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves."

While I was still reading "Outlander", I ordered the rest of the series as I was enthralled by that first book. The second book, "Dragonfly in Amber" didn't disappointed me at all. A must-read for those who liked the first book of the series, admired Sassenack and fell for Jamie...

Really enjoyed this! I read Cross Stitch a couple of months ago and loved the escapism of adventure/ romance of Claire and Jamie's relationship.
In this book, the story largely takes place in France, and we get more intrigue and plotting as the Jacobite uprising gains momentum.
Jaime and Claire are more settled in their love for each other, although this doesn't stop the fiery arguments!

The only thing that made me wonder a bit was why Gabaldon chose to have Claire come from the 1940s - I guess this gave her useful experience in dealing with battle wounds and injuries, but part of me would have been interested in seeing someone from a more recent time (the 1990s, maybe) deal with going back in time.
And lastly (and here I'm injecting a *Spoiler Warning*, so don't read any more if you don't want any clues!)

How did Gillian, who went back in time twenty years after Claire did, manage to arrive in a time before Claire's arrival? Maybe I missed something in the text, but if anyone can shed any light as to how/ why, I'd be grateful!

Thanks very much asterw for sharing this - I'm now looking out for the next in the series as this definitely ended on a cliffhanger!

PMed Lakuska for her address, and will try and send on by mid-week.

5/7/05 - Posted to Lakuska this morning
