Just like Courteny and Yoko, everyone loved to hate Nancy. It seemed pretty easy in Nancy's case - she whined, she threw fits, she was just plain horrible - and the media loved it all. After reading this book written by her mother it was also very very unfair. It's heartbreaking to hear how a bright young kid became the infamous Nancy Spungen, what it cost her, and her family, how the mental health system failed her and in fact often contributed to her abuse. Her mother tells the story very different from the media - Nancy was a brain damaged infant, and there was no reall help for her or her family. As a mom, I especially felt for her mother Deborah who truly tried her best, and ultimately failed. I was especially pissed off at how the conventional system dissuaded her from seeking alternative treatments - in particular, orthomolecular/naturopathic treatments that in my experience might have actually helped her to some degree. Another example of how the mental health system betrayed her. And hearing from her mom's perspective about her murder by Sid was horrendous.
Her mom has now dedicated her life to working with families of murder victims.
