The Great Gatsby

This is reserved for MoJoDenUK. As an American sending to the UK, I thought sending American literature was appropriate. I prefer John Steinbeck, but couldn't find any at the store I was shopping. I don't particularly care for this novel, but it is supposedly a beloved American classic.
Whatever you choose to do with it, MoJoDenUK, Enjoy!

Finally sent to MoJoDenUK for the sweepstake!
This lovely, shiny book arrived in the post today in pristine condition. I thought I had received all I was going to get so this was a nice surprise! I saw the film many many years ago but have completely forgotten the story now.
Thanks for taking the trouble to send this to me. I shall duly report on it when read!

I must admit I didn't like the book very much either. It did absolutely nothing for me and I really fail to understand how it became such a popular classic.
Maybe the next reader will enjoy it more than I did though I'm not sure where I shall be releasing it yet.

Picked up at the Nottingham meet. I had to study this for my American Lit module and loved it - but I passed my copy onto another student in the year below so I'm pleased to have another copy to re-read!
Although I can't say I care for the characters in the novel, I love the writing style.

This was a set text on my New Frontiers - American Literature of the 19th and 20th Centuries module. I wasn't sure about this at first - 'The American Dream' and collapse thereof is now a bit of a cliche. I guess when Fitzgerald wrote this, it was pre-Wall Street Crash, pre-Depression, pre-Second World War, and American optimism was still strong and that this book was new and startling.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Even though I found most of the character's unsympathetic, I couldn't help but be drawn into the book by the beautiful prose Fitzgerald uses - it was way above my expectations. His descriptions are not excessive, they are beautifully done and his characterisation is sharp and incisive.
The movie is vastly inferior - read and enjoy the book instead!
