Another book recently acquired from Powell's. It's based in the Willamette Valley where I live, and I look forward to reading it.
I really enjoyed this book. The story is set in a post "Doomwar" Oregon (where I'm from), telling the story of a man who invents a fiction to survive, and watches his fiction become reality.
The movie "The Postman" (which I liked as well, although it got lousy reviews) is loosely based on this book, but the book is a quite different. Not necessarily better, but certainly has a much less pat ending than the movie.
It's science fiction, but without a lot of the hard science that turns me off of most sci-fi. Instead, it delves much more into the characters, their thoughts and emotions--something that's usually lacking from most sci-fi/fantasy, in my humble opinion.
I highly recommend it.
