This book is incredible.

Beth Weeks, a teenager living on a farm in Western Canada, deals with the daily tribulations of a war-wounded father, a mother who speaks with the dead and legion of diverse townspeople. She is a strong female character, driven and opinionated, yet shy and confused (as most teenaged girls can be). The reader can feel themselves transplanted into Beth's story and transformed by it.

Got it at Mojoe's Cafe. I was chatting with the guy and he showed me the July 2005 issue of Fresh Cup, an coffee/tea industry mag, with a big article on Bookcrossing and how it can increase traffic at coffee houses. You can see it at www.freshcup.com. Thanks for the book! I left one there in it's place.

Later: Hmmm, this was a tough book. Life on a farm was hard work. The details of how to kill a chicken make me glad to be vegetarian. A theme is the color red and blood.
From page 158: Rasberries hang like nipples on tall, thorny stalks. If a rasberry is ripe, caressing it with your fingertips will bring the berry rolling into your hand. But wait for that ripeness. A berry plucked too early has no sweetness, only a coarse flavor that will pucker your lips up tight. When a berry is ready you'll know by it's softness, the deep purple-red color, and the ease with which it gives itself to you.
