AFTER THE WALL

Journal Entry 1 by reallifeplace from Berlin (irgendwo/somewhere), Berlin Germany on Tuesday, May 10, 2005
Registriert anlässlich des 60. Jahrestages des Endes des Zweiten Weltkrieges und der Einweihung des Holocaust-Denkmals in Berlin.
Picked up at bookcrossing in Berlin last night. And very much looking forward to reading it.
Hmmm - I on the whole rather enjoyed this and was at first going to pass it on to various English-speaking colleagues for some insight into post-Wall Germany, but the more I read, the more I found that some of the facts needed to be taken with large pinches of salt - such as the "fact" that you need a special authorisation for an answering machine in Germany (something I never experienced and that no-one I asked has heard of). Nor am I entirely convinced by Marc Fisher's English rendering of some German expressions.
Despite my quibbles with some of the basis for his musings on Germany, I did find it interesting and, while I would always rather read Timothy Garton Ash for solid facts and an ability to conveny the nuances of German polit-speak to an English-speaking audience, this is worth reading provided one has one's pinches of salt to hand!
To be released at next meetup in Berlin
