Paulo loves Jessica. He thinks that together they are complete--a family of two. But Jessica can't be happy until she has a baby, and the baby stubbornly refuses to come. Can a man and a woman ever really be a family of two?

Megan doesn't love her boyfriend anymore. After a one-night stand with an Australian beach bum, she finds that even a trainee doctor can slip up on the family planning. Should you bring a child into the world if you don't love its father?

Cat loves her life. After bringing up her two younger sisters, all she craves is freedom. Her older boyfriend has done the family thing before and is in no rush to do it all again. But can a modern woman really find true happiness without ever being in the family way?

Three sisters. Three couples. Two pregnancies. Six men and women struggling with sex, love and the meaning of family. And one more bitter-sweet bestseller from the author of Man and Boy

I picked this up to read because I was looking for some light entertainment but after a few chapters I realised there is way more to this book than to his previous novels. It's all about relationships, families, love, wanting babies but not being able to have one, having babies but not wanting one etc and I found myself drawn into the lives of the three very different sisters. We all struggle in life to find love and hold on to it so I am sure this book is going to hit a spot in everyone life as the characters are very real and human. The ending might be a bit tacky but then again, I liked the people in the book so much that I just wanted the best for them in the end too.

I really enjoyed reading this book, especially for the reason that it has asked many interesting questions

I wondered if this book wanted to show different ways of going the family way, but it all ends up quite the same: eventually all three women have children. I was amazed by the love and the deep relationship between the sisters and a bit disappointed that they didn't have a "real happy end". The book is written in a sensitive and warm-hearted way, and I definitely have to read more of Tony Parsons!

Just returned from a short vacation and guess what I found in the mail.
And good timing too. I got the urge for a good book.

Many thx coco7 for the funny (phone-)card :)

Having read all his previous books and liking them all equally I was worried that this might finally be the bad one....But nope - this again is a great read. Being a parent myself I understood the feelings of the characters and cried and laughed with them. Only Parsons is able to cover those topics without being too kitschy. All his storys are not really out of the ordinary or specially exciting - but it's the way he writes it that makes Parsons great. Funny and serious and most of all unashamedly emotional.

omg, this book has stayed so very long at my place, I've just had too much RL in the last months (one of those RL-things being that my little one becomes more mobile from day to day, soon he'll be a toddler..;-))! I'm sorry!

Well, now to my criticism: I really loved the book and will certainly look out for more by Tony Parsons. The constellation has reminded me a little of "The Memory of Water" of Shelagh Stephenson. Thanks for the ring, the book will travel on as soon as I get ekaterin4luv's address.

I found The Family Way very emotional and intense, and in some aspects it hits quite a bit too close to home for comfort.

One of the lovliest things about bookcrossing - is that my post box often has things other than bills nowadays. Not only did LittleSuz send me this book but also a lovely postcard of Edinburgh Castle - Pipers on Parade.

I was in that wonderful city a month ago - but sadly couldn't meet up with bookcrossers - no problem, one of the books left over from their lastest meeting has found its way to me anyway. Thank you Little Suz for your generosity in paying for the postage and sending this (and other) book(s) out!

It's especially lovely to receive this as it's such a well travelled book. I'm hoping that it travels well here in Finland too :)

Started this book a few days ago with no real expectations --- but loved it. I really enjoyed the way the author (Tony Parsons) gets into controversial issues - such as divorce, adultery, underfunding for health care, and grapples with the biggest issue of all "what is family"

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Journal Entry 24 by potok-fan at Turku, Varsinais-Suomi / Egentliga Finland Finland on Monday, June 14, 2010
This was amongst the huge pile of books at pippis's bookcrossing social on Saturday. I looked at the back and read out loud, "Can a man and a woman ever really be a family?" I said to see-throughfaith that my husband and I (who have no children together) are a couple, but I cannot really think of us as a family. Then stf said, "You should read this book." So I brought it home.

Hoping to read this on our travels in England and then release!

My apologies - I used to be pretty good about journalling, including my thoughts on the book... but all I know about this one anymore is that I read it a while back and when I suddenly remembered that I wanted to release a book at my hairdressers on Friday, I grabbed this one.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

In November I noticed that Kake had put several (Finnish) books out on his shelves. I asked and he said they were books he'd finished with, to share. I put in a plug for bookcrossing, and vowed to bring a BC book to my next appointment. This was it :)
