First of the Kent series.
I love epics, so this series seems like an interesting read.
This book begins with Phillipe learning he is the bastard son of the Earl of Kentland, an English aristocrat who has indicated he acknowledges his claim. When Phillipe and his mother go to be recognized, the Earl's wife and Phillipe's half-brother try to deny the claim. Much happens and Phillipe eventually emigrates to the colonies and is swept up in the revolution.
I found it an interesting read, especially as I never did understand the reasons for the American revolution. The characters were a little romanticized. I found Phillipe understood his feelings and reacted far too maturely for a nineteen-year-old. One may argue it was a different time and he would be much more mature, but he seemed more a product of the author's purposes than a real person.
Still an interesting read.
