An abortionist who runs an orphanage tries to get one of the boys, Homer, to be of use and learn the trade. Homer "runs" away, grows up, falls in love (a complicated triangle), yet never escapes his need to be of use or his love for his father figure.

A well written novel full of interesting characters and intersting thought.
