I picked this one up because of its cover. The blurb on the back is short and sweet (and certainly doesn't sound as gay focussed as the book is). It's a tale about life and love (themes central to many books). It's an interesting read, and it certainly opened my eyes...

Here is what the blurb says:
Aaron is a shy tax accountant who's not sure whether he prefers life in or outside of the closet. But that's before he meets the Boy of his Dreams. Fergal turns Aaron's life upside down and causes a credit card meltdown - he just won't be satisfied until he's got his hands on a Maserati sports.

And then there's Nicholas, a hack actor in a second-rate sci-fi movie, who's fallen in love for the first time...with his tax accountant.

I know I said I wouldn't, but I probably will.

It's About Your Friend arrived safely in today's mail; many thanks, peggysmum! I've enjoyed Scott's series of books about Marc, opera queen and amateur detective, and am delighted to get to see how he does with a completely different cast of characters. [This looks like a perfect book for reading in the hammock on a warm summer evening!]

This book turned out to be a bit darker than the typical Marc-and-friends novel, though this one was still plenty funny; sort of a gay who's-conning-whom bedroom farce, in which the audience is always (well, almost always) several steps ahead of the main characters. [Hint: shouting "no, you fool, can't you see he's just using you?" at the pages may be cathartic but does not affect the story. {grin}] I admit I was surprised once or twice, but more at the shape of the story rather than the individual plot points and who-winds-up-with-whom.

Lots of jokes here, including some pop-culture references - after hearing someone make a crack about his employer, Mr. Burns, "Roger sniggered. Even after ten years, the fact that his employer had the same name as a cartoon character still amused him. Roger may have been less amused to know that some people referred to him behind his back as Smithers." I also got a kick out of Scott's occasional flights of descriptiveness: "If pimples had to erupt, if the pustular imperative was so strong, why couldn't it happen on his back where they would be invisible to everyone including him?"

"The pustular imperative" - hee!

*** I'm offering this on the Gay and Lesbian Book Relay.

It's About Your Friend felt a bit like the typical 'gays of our lives' drama bullshit. Needless to say, I was quite amused.

Think Tales of the City set in Australia.

There are lots of predictable lines, cheesy comebacks, and unrealistic scenes, most of which were quite enjoyable. However, if you're one for spectacular endings (and I am!), this ending will leave you wanting for more. If you're looking for something silly, and light, this book delivers.

Besides, what happens to the 'Pussy Love Association'?

I enjoyed bits and pieces of it but there were too many loose ends. BTW, what did happen to Pussy Love?

This was an entertaining read, and I actually chuckled to myself a few times - mainly on public transportation, which is always kind of funny/awkward, depending on your general mood.

I almost left the novel be when I realised it begins in a brothel. The "young, pretty and cunning rent boy you fall in love with" scenario is just so old, and I was not impressed by the way the book depicts transwomen and transgenderism. Sure, historically prostitution has been happening in the trans community in many parts of the world, but coming back to that stereotype over and over again makes it seem like prostitution was the norm in any community of transwomen. It also really irked me when transwomen were called "girls" in quotes. Maybe it was to show how the narrator feels towards transgenderism/-sexuality, but it seemed unnecessary.

**SPOILER WARNING**

I too found the loose ends annoying, particularly the fact that Aaron was first facing potential legal problems due to his Pussy Love schemes, but then he got money and zap, no apparent ramifications at all. What was that all about?
