I think this is a very touching story and miles better than the film.
"The story of nine-year-old Meena, the daughter of the only Punjabi family in the Midlands' mining village of Tollington. The novel provides a vision of British childhood in the 1960s, a childhood caught between two cultures, each on the brink of enormous change."
I'm sending this out on a bookray. At the moment the members are:

What a great read, really enjoyed the style of writing. loved meena's character you can't help but identify with her. Enjoyed the humour as well as the sadness, Meena's humour makes you see the world as she does, through a childs eyes.
Glad I had the chance to read thankyou pennywhistler.
will be sending to dodau on thursday when next at post office.

Waiting for me when I arrived home from holiday today
I've tried watching the film of this several times but have always been interupted part way through. After reading this though next time it's on nothing is going to drag me from that tv. this was an excellant book, warm, funny and also sad in places. It shows just how casual racism was in the seventies but also how people saw a difference between their darkies and darkies who lived else where. A horrible way for people to be and thankfully it's mostly changed now. I grew up in the seventies and remember how the black, asian and white kids all kept to their sepperate little gangs. It was interesting to see it from the other side and realise that we weren't that different after all.

Thanks for passing this on, one book ahead and then I should get to this.
Try as I might I could not get into this book which is mainly
why I have had it for so long. Druscillamac has already read it so I am passing it onto nixpj.

Posted to nixpj today, apologies to all in the ring for the hold up and especially to Pennywhistler. Thank you for including me.
Arrived today - many thanks to Jaysgirl - I'm almost finished the book I'm reading so will get to this by the weekend!!
Can't wait!My first book ring ;)
Update: Finished this morning - I really enjoyed this. Don't usually laugh out loud at books (except Bill Bryson) but my girlfriend complained that I was giggling too much so I guess this one hit the spot!!
I come from this area of the world so the dialect was fun to read. Having spent many happy hours enjoying asian hospitality, many of the social events brought back memories. I'd definitely look out for more of her books.
