Theodore Roosevelt, before he was a Rough Rider, before he was a politician, was a cowboy. He headed west in the early 1880's to hunt buffalo and was the owner of a couple of cattle ranches. This book is based on his experiences in the Dakota Bad Lands.

"I do not believe there ever was any life more attractive to a vigorous young fellow than life on a cattle ranch in those days. It was a fine, healthy life, too; it taught a man self-reliance, hardihood, and the value of instant decision -- in short, the virtues that ought to come from life in the open country. I enjoyed the life to the full."

This is a facsimile of the edition originally published in 1888, with illustrations by Frederic Remington. There is curious Editor's Note on the copyright page. After stating that this is a facsimile, it says, "As such, it reflects the culture and attitudes of late nineteenth-century American, which are not necessarily those of the publisher of this Gramercy edition."
