This book was given to me by Miss Tree to send to the Belmont Diamonds youth group. I'm worried it may be a bit intense for them, so I decided to include it in my nonfiction bookbox instead.

A well written memoir of the life of a female slave in the early 1800s in North Carolina. The book primarily follows Harriet Jacobs from ages 12 - 28. This was very definitely a woman who never accepted that slavery was her lot and strove constantly to free herself. As is very apparent from her actions she was willing to undergo anything in her quest to circumvent her master and to be free and to free her children from bondage as well. It was helpful to check out the internet information on her because it shows pictures of her master and the house in which she hid for 7 years. I would like to read more about her later life because she obviously took an active part in helping others and trying to change legislation to do so.
