An entertaining kid's "chapter book" from 1963. I remember it fondly from when I read it in primary school, which is why I bought it again when I found it at the UNSW Bookfair.
Eight-year-old Barney discovers a caveman living in the nearby dump, makes friends, and they have adventures like tailing a fox-hunt (Stig lets the fox go, because it tastes bad, and attacks the delicious horses instead) and capturing an escaped leopard.

Goodness, haven't I journaled this book yet??!! Oops sorry... Well I snaffled it from Fleebo at the Porterhouse pub during the May meetup.
I read this book at primary school and really loved it, and this was one of the books I'd been on the look out for since joining BC.

Well I have finished re-reading it today and can definitely see why I enjoyed it so long ago! It's a great story. Barney doesnt really seem to mind or think it too strange to find a caveman living in the dump near his Grandma's house - a place he visits each school holiday - and despite neither of the boys understanding each other, they have some magical days together. Is Stig 8, or 80 or 800? he wonders!

There's a funny thing in the first chapter, when Barney first falls down the cliff into the chalk pit:
"His thoughts did those funny things they do when you bump your head and you suddenly find yourself thinking about what you had for dinner last Tuesday, all mixed up with seven times six."
and why is this funny? Well the answer being 42, is *the* answer of course - to life, the universe and everything!
I just wondered whether Douglas Adams had ever read this book, and precisely when he wrote his Hitchhiker books!? heheh, I'm sure it is a complete coincidence, however it struck me as odd...

A great book, thanks Fleebo, and now there is a list of people who want to read it:
lollie-mavette
mandyjoy (to re-read)
and jimbob (yet to join!)
