The Novel

James Michener is definitely one of my favorite authors, but I hadn't even heard about this book of his. Purchased at the San Carlos Library used book sale.

Michener takes a break from historical fiction and follows a novel from its conception until it gets to the reader. Set in Pennsylvania Dutch country and written in four interacting voices - - the writer Yoder, the editor, the critic, and the reader. I learned a lot about the publishing world in the first two sections, but the story bogged down in section three with lots of literary inside jokes, as the critic gives his view of the world in general and the author in particular. The story asks the question, “what makes a good novel?” For me, the answer is that a novel doesn’t have to be “critically acclaimed” to be a good read.
