This book was hilarious, and gives me a new, satirical perpsective on newspapers and newsgathering. I loved the word play, the name play. The protagonist, William de Worde, has toiled gathering inconsequential news for a newsheet sent to rich clientele. He accidentally discovers the availability of a printing press when he literally runs into the dwarves bringing it into town. The dwarves have a way of turning lead into gold, by using the lead letters simply to print de Worde's newspaper, and therefore make money.
But the project quickly goes out of control. The motto of the Ankh-Morpork Times is the truth make ye free, but is mispelled at one point to fret.
De Worde uncovers a conspiracy to take over the city government, and has an uneasy relationship with the Watch, who aren't as interested in the truth as they are in preserving order of some kind. The paper's icongrapher is a vampire who often falls into a pile of dust after the flash goes off.
And de Worde, who comes from money but has worked hard to be desperately poor, finds himself wondering how he can get rid of some of the money he's unexpectedly making.
I'd have to say I'd now be willing to read more Terry Pratchett. The humor in this book very much reminded me of Douglas Adams.
