An entertaining book, but very, very weird at times. I suppose that's what a book is supposed to be like when the two main characters are using every narcotic in existence.

Finally made it to the top of my TBR pile!!

Wild ride from Hollywood to Las Vegas in a drug-induced stupor. Book was written in 1971 and details the craziness of the times.

From an amazon.com reviewer:
It takes a rare individual to drive to Vegas in a drug haze, get swallowed, mind-altered, into the guts of the glittering city, abuse, get abused, commit every form of hedonistic gluttony, and then come away to sit down and write a nearly lucid narrative about the trip.
The simple act of reading this drug addled tale is a bit like going on an acid bender by proxy. At times, you think Hunter a hero. At times, you think him a self-destructed ass. He makes you cringe with the vivid honesty of the tale, though part of you envies his recklessness and Dionysian spirit. The skewed look at Vegas and the culture of mind-alerting drugs was written back when the great city still had its sinful strip. In some ways, it feels as though Vegas was designed with this half mad writer in mind. At times, you sense that Hunter and his companion manage to corrupt even this decadent place, a feat few people can manage. It is even more startling when you realize, as a reader, that the pair were there on a work assignment.

I noticed that this book is on several wish-lists so I will be starting a bookray for this.

This is also No. 358 on the 1001 books you must read before you die list.

I felt I had to read this book because of its infamy. It was easy to read but very weird. I guess I just can't relate to being on an uninterrupted acid (or whatever) trip. How did he live that long with those habits?

Journal Entry 10 by pelikanol from Treherbert, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, July 15, 2006
This is a different book. I'm not really sure what to think of it. I was never bored, but never excited either. It's an interesting look on the drug culture back then, and the authors' thoughts and discriptions are very interesting and very weird. I wish there had been more thoughts on the matter of things, though.

If you like weird, this is a book you want to read.

I'll send the book on when I get the next persons addy.

Journal Entry 11 by rafangel from Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Friday, August 4, 2006
Got the book today. Thank you, pelikanol!!
It's going to be on my TBR-pile for a while, but I'm trying to read it asap.

EDIT 23.8.

I finally read the book. Well, really a couple of weeks ago, but I have been way too busy to even think about sending it forward.
The book was really entertaining, and I enjoyed the illustration by Ralph Steadman a lot. I had seen the movie, and I think it was turned pretty well from a book to a movie (I don't know the exact word for that..). The book was very fast to read, and when I really got into it, it only took me couple of days to finish it. I'm sending it off to Magika later this week..

Journal Entry 12 by Magika on Wednesday, August 30, 2006
Arrived a couple of days ago - I've been without internet connection for a while, so haven't been able to register it before. Anyway, got one ring ahead of this one, but will get to it ASAP.

Try as I may, I just don't think this is the kind of book for me right now, so I've decided to send it on without finishing it. Sorry for holding up the ring. I'll mail it to the next participant as soon as I get her address.

Journal Entry 15 by Sternschnuppe28 from Flörsheim am Main, Hessen Germany on Wednesday, October 18, 2006
Mmmhh! What can I say about this book?!? I liked its illustrations best ... and can see, what made it a cult book back in the 70ties as a counterpart to the (ultimate) American dream and the failed dreams and hopes of the hippie generation. Unfortunately I did not find any access to the story.

I forwarded "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" to rennie1811 today.

Recd this book on the weekend, Im not sure if it is what I expected or not, I must admit I found myself more reading and hoping that they would go to more places that I had been to whilst in Vegas so I could compare. I found the book quite strange and would like to see the movie to see how it all compares. Thanks for putting it out there and I have emailed wubbaducky today to find out mailing details.

I wasn't sure what to expect of this and I was a little bit disappointed... I've not seen the film so I was completely unprepared for the drug-fuelled orgy that fills it from cover to cover. It was interesting but very different.

What a strange book! The illustrations were great! Much like claudinec, I too felt that I just had to read this book because of its infamy, and I'm glad I finally did. Well, I finished the book this weekend during a trip to Boston. I'm not sure what I was expecting from the book, but I really enjoyed it. I thought it was fascinating and very funny, and for someone my age (young enough to have missed this part of history) it was really interesting to read about the drug and general culture of the time. It was also a suprisingly quick read for me. I saw the movie awhile back and don't remember much, but I think I'll rent it again now that the book is fresh in my mind. I'll probably understand the movie better this time around!

I finished the book last night. It was entertaining and really easy to read. Not quite as weird as Naked Lunch but still chock full of illegal substances and strange trips! I particularly liked the scene about checking in to the Flamingo with all the cops standing around. Funny stuff! And driving the attorney to the airport in the White Whale... too bad you can't do stuff like that anymore!

I had a blast with this book! I just finished it on the way home from my vacation, and I can assure you that my visit to Florida brought with it none of the adventures that Thompson and his "attorney" encountered. ;) I don't know how I've managed not to read this book all these years, but I'm so glad I had the opportunity to do so now. WILD RELEASE NOTES:

This was a pretty "gonzo" book. Read it very quickly. I am surprised Thompson lived as long as he did having consumed so many drugs. Looking forward to seeing the movie. While reading this, I wondered if some of the events actually happened or if they were "Raoul Duke"'s hallucinations from mescaline or LSD. If they discovered the American Dream on this jaunt, it makes me quite sad.

Has this book really been "on tour" for two years now? Quite impressive.

Journal Entry 48 by kizmiaz from Belém , Lisboa (cidade) Portugal on Friday, August 22, 2008
What a bizarre experience. A truly original American author and a truly original American story.
This was my first book by this author but I’m betting it won’t be my last; the hilarious/catastrophic situations and the “don’t-give-a-damn” philosophy of the main characters are the perfect motor for this rambling/meditative sort of free word association about Vegas, drugs and the end of the Flower Power dream, written in a compelling and gripping way.
If Altamont was the big event that killed the Flower Power vision this book is certainly the headstone on the grave, Leary’s ideal turned sour, or better yet, turned rotten.
In the vain search for the American Dream Duke finds it dead and buried while on a binge of every possible illegal substance, the hallucinations, the freaking out, the shivers and the sweats, it’s all here in its naked and ugly truth, no higher ideals than getting stoned out their minds and enjoying the Shangri-La of the Nevada desert.
The main considerations about the end of the Love Generation are buried in gory hallucinations, paranoid thoughts and reckless driving, but they’re right there for the readers who care to dig for them.
I laughed pretty much all the way through but when I finished it left me thinking about some of the issues it raises in between the lines.
I’ll be sending it on when I get an address.
Sept. 9 - toothshelling asked to be skipped.
Sept. 11 - on its way to ekranda

Journal Entry 50 by Paws4Books from Deal, Kent United Kingdom on Thursday, November 6, 2008
I really enjoyed this one!!! It made far more sense to me than the film did - I was dragged off to watch that at the cinema when it came out and I didn't put up a fight because it stared Johnny Depp!! I really enjoyed the illustrations inside the book too but then again I’m originally from Kent which is where I became familiar with his artwork...the Pizza Express in Maidstone used to display his pictures on their walls...I think I remember him doing some charity work too where he did his interpretation of the bank symbols – it was rather dark!

It is a very dark humour novel and even though I found it entertaining it wasn’t one of the best from the 1001 list but I did enjoy it! Sometimes it’s nice to just change the pace and read something entirely different (all be it totally insane) which is one of the reasons I took up the challenge of the 1001 list of books to read before I die – the diversity of the list!

Thank you so much for sharing this one – I think I understand a bit more than I did about the film now (even though it’s been a while since I last saw it – it was certainly memorable!) since reading this book!!

Will contact the next person on the list and I’m very interested to see how they find it as there has been a very varied reaction to this one from everyone that has read it so far!

Thanks for sharing!

Not sure what to say about this book. I have liked it much more than the books by Bret Easton Ellis which, somehow, talk about a similar "subculture" (although at a different point in time). I thought the atmosphere of the book was not so oppressing and the book was comic sometimes.

A very strange book, indeed. I don't know that I'd like to meet these guys....

I have bookworm76's address, so will get this into the mail over the weekend.

Book arrived just before Xmas and I thought I had journalled it but clearly Xmas was a bit hectic and I must have missed hitting the button to submit. Sorry

This book was really odd. It took me a while to get into but in the end I thought it was worth while reading. I did have to read in short bursts because my head started spinning (probably because the character's heads were spinning too). I also can understand how it is not everyone's type of book.

This book arrived about 10 days ago. Sorry I did not report its arrival. My husband spotted it before I'd noted its arrival and has been reading it. I'll get onto it very soon.
Thanks to everyone involved so far.

Journal Entry 75 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Monday, March 1, 2010
My husband snaffled this book and when pressed for an opinion said it was a rather depressing theme about someone living outside the normal bounds of behaviour but living in a fashion that likely passes for normal for someone under the influence of powerful drugs.

Must confess that I tried to read it, seeking an alternative perspective on the American Dream, but just couldn't take to it at all. Am really relieved to send it on its way. I'm trying to read books on the 1001 Books list in an attempt to widen my reading away from my very favourite Forensic science crime stories. So far there've been very few that I've enjoyed at all. This one I didn't even read enough of it to pass an opinion.

Must say though THANK YOU to those who have gone before and kept it moving. You can't know until you try something different.

Book returned through mail system. Apparently the number in the address was incorrect. I'll be investigating and try to solve this puzzle.

I NEED HELP,

I posted this book to FrancesinSA back in March. It was returned to me on 11 May and i sent an immediate pm to FrancesinSA explaining that it was returned marked "No such number" and asking her to send me her address again since when I've not heard from her.
The spirit is willing but I do need some help with this one. I'll send her another message today but I will be away for 2 weeks and once I return home for a couple of weeks then I will be heading overseas for six weeks. If I don't hear during the first absence I'm not sure of the best way to proceed to avoid another long delay.

Decided that I'd also send a pm to the next person on the list etnagigante and if she responds before FrancesinSA then I'll simply post the book to her but will suggest that perhaps she could send to SA. The book really must start moving again.

Journal Entry 79 by FrancesinSA at Sasolburg, Free State South Africa on Tuesday, June 29, 2010
I received this book today. Sorry, Sherlockfan - I never received your PM about the book being returned to you. Thanks for the nice note and the picture of the world's rarest parrot, the kakapo.

11 July 2010 - I finished reading this today. I found it entertaining and hilarious. Luckily, airport security is no longer as lax as it was in 1971. I Googled Hunter S. Thompson and read that he committed suicide.

I have the next reader's address and will post this out next week.

The book is here

Journal Entry 82 by etnagigante at Catania, Sicilia Italy on Tuesday, August 17, 2010
A sort of instant trip (phisycal and mental) searching the American Dream made from the author and a friend, here named Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo. All begins, all of a sudden, covering (or trying to cover) a race in Nevada and the two friends (the journalist and his attorney). Problems begin when the two start buying so many drugs and alcohol able to kill a handful of marines and abusing. We see and listent to all the allucinated dreams and chats, men fooled, scared or ridiculed just for nothing. The story is splitted in two parts, with a Red Shark and a White Whale as cars and a number of hotels and casinoes that show us the best and the worst of a city, Las Vegas, full of good and evil, saint and sinners, often the second ones.
Ralph Steadman's strange and allucinated illustrations help us to enter in the mood of these trips.

Book arrived safe and sound, will get to it as soon as I can

16 Oct 10 - not sure what that was all about but I kind of enjoyed it. Good advert not to take drugs that's for sure! As someone else commented I'm glad security has tightened up at airports. I am not sure how well the hallucinations would come across in the film but would so would be interested to watch it. I have the address of the next person so will get it in the post next week.

This was a very confusing book for me and while the description of the drug's effects were pretty interesting I didn't really enjoy the book.

Neither hated, nor loved reading this books. It's all about drugs...and Vegas. Two supposed mamals of the American Dream.
I missed the subject. I read better books about Vegas, or drugs. I still don't understand what gonzo journalism is about and I still don't understand what makes this book part of the 1001 list.

As soon as I catch the next reader adress, I'll send it.

This was an entertaining book. I cannot believe someone can do that many drugs and still be alive... The seventies were definitely messed-up (not that this sort of stuff doesn't happen anymore). The book was definitely more interesting than the movie though.

Arrived yesterday - Thanks all for sharing. This is one well travelled book. On seeing the book my husband reckons I won't like it based on his having seen the film! We'll see...

I found this book surprisingly readable. I think I was more disturbed by some of the artwork! My husband has asked if he can read this. Once he's done I'll offer it up on the forum as a RABCK.

This book was so random. I'm not sure I fully followed the story as it gets weird and wonderful in many places. Having said that though, it did make me chuckle too. And it's apparently true!!! (Only discovered that an out half way through.)
