Carrie and her little sister live with their abusive step father and emotionally distant and neglectful mother. Seen from the perspective of Carrie, an eight year old yearning to have a normal life, this book was sad and emotionally draining. Flock does an excellent job of describing the thoughts of a child, although the language seemed sometimes sophisticated for some one only eight years old. It’s a book that you can’t really say you ‘enjoy’ but rather appreciate, since child abuse is often difficult to read about. I do recommend it, but be prepared for some graphic violence
