A well-written and probing look at postwar Germany and the continuing impact of the Second World War on the nation's psyche. I picked this up because of my interest in German literature but found the story rather cold and distant. It didn't really move me until just before the end. Certainly I think there's a lot going on in the book, and it's worth looking at again, but I think if I read it again I'd try to get a copy in German.
This copy has an "Oprah's Book Club" banner at the top, which is perhaps why I was able to get it for 50 cents at the Lafayette Library's perpetual book sale. It doesn't bother me particularly, but I know for some people this can be a turn-off, and some used book stores won't appaently won't accept books with book club stickers - whether because they get too many of them or because they think people won't buy them I don't know.
