The Back of the Book

Following on from the brilliant The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Tears of the Giraffe charts the further adventures of Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's only - and finest - female private detec tive.

It's going to take all her intuition and eminent sensibility for Precious to crack her hardest case yet: the decade-old disappearance of an American on the edge of the Kalahari. And if that wasn't enough, there are plenty of matters closer to home to concern her: her highly talented secretary, Mma Makutsi, eager to be promoted to detective; the unscrupulous maid of her husband-to-be, the wonderful Mr J L B Matekoni; and the sudden - and unexpected - increase in her family by not one, but two.

'Smart and sassy ... Precious' progress is charted in passages that have the power to amuse or shock or touch the heart, sometimes all at once' Los Angeles Times

I really enjoyed seeing the characters developed in this, the second in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. There are new people to meet too - all of whom add to the atmosphere.

This is the first of Alexander McCall Smith's books I've read that didn't read like a series of short stories involving the same characters and I really enjoyed it.

I think this one was even better than the first. The story was more fluent, there weren't as many seperate stories as in the first one. And I love the kids!
But what happened with Mr Maketoni's maid? I know, she's in prison. But what solution is that?

What a wonderful book! I agree with Laura, I preferred the style of this book, ie fewer storyines :-) Very satisfying storylines and conclusions. Thanks for lending it to me Sunneschii - have you got number three in the series? :-)
