Stevenson's great adventure story, set in the 18th century, was conceived in the Scottish Highlands, where the author and his 12-year-old stepson amused themselves by making a map that showed the location of buried treasure on an island. It was an instant best-seller when first published in 1883, and this new adaptation for younger readers overcomes the main problem with the original text - that some of the language of the salty sea dogs is very difficult for people not familiar with it to understand.
The discovery of a treasure map in Captain Flint's sea chest plunges young Jim Hawkins into a series of adventures as sudden and unexpected as the Captain's arrival at the Admiral Benbow Inn. For Jim, life will never be quite the same again, as he becomed involved with the one-legged Long John Silver, teacherous Captain Billy Bones, wicked Black Dog and the terrifying Blind Pew.
It is quite simply the greatest pirate story ever written, and I intend to release it to celebrate UNESCO's World Book and Copyright Day on April 23.
