I INHALED this book-- it's a fast, fascinating read.

I enjoyed the book so much I emailed the author to tell her. Here is her response (which I find very inspiring, being an over 40 author):

Dear Lucinda:

Thank you so much for your kind words. Would you believe I put off writing a book for twenty years because I was afraid people would hate my writing and tell me it was terrible.

The great thing about being over forty is that suddenly you don't care so much about people's opinions and are ready to go out there and try. You have to. Suddenly you are aware of the thought of your own mortality and hate the thought of dying without trying.

I am finishing up SEX WITH THE QUEEN which should come out a year from now. And it looks like we will be turning SEX WITH KINGS into a documentary, perhaps for The History Channel or A&E, with me narrating, in costume!

Regards,
Eleanor Herman

Sex with Kings is an interesting look at history but at times repetative. Stories that fit into more than one topic get repeated in different chapters. The book though ends with commentary on Charles and Camilla, though this information is now out of date after their recent marriage. While reading I found myself wishing for a follow up: "Sex with Presidents."

Got this in the mail today! It looks quite interesting & I can't wait to start it!

Journal Entry 7 by HallieK from Austin, Texas USA on Saturday, June 18, 2005
What an interesting book. It's written very well and is full of some very funny, strange stories. But, by the 3/4 mark I was really tired of hearing about Charles II and Louis XIV and their women so I started skimming and just reading parts with interesting titles. Overall, it's a great read, though. Thanks Lucinda!

I wanted to share a couple things from the book I read after Sex with Kings. It's Strong Poison by Dorothy L. Sayers. A character makes the comment "And there are families that hold their heads high that wouldn't ever have existed but for some king or other taking his amusements on the wrong side of the blanket as the old saying goes."

And, about an actress "Under her stage name of Cremorna Garden, she went from one disreputable truimph to another. And, mind you, she had brains- nothing of the Nell Gwyn business about her. She was the take-it-and-keep-it sort."

I wouldn't have thought twice about these two comments if I hadn't just read Sex with Kings, but since I had, I thought it was pretty neat.

Mailed out 7/14/05. Sorry for the delay.

A delicious romp through the boudoirs and bedrooms of Europe's most (im)famous royal mistresses.

it took me a little more time to read than i thought. but i liked it. sometimes it was a bit repetitive, and a bit confuse with names from english kings to french, to german, and i got a litle bit lost, mas the stories we're funny and interesting, which made me read them till the end.
I'll pass it to Xanocas tomorrow in hands. Hope she has more time to read it now.

I received this in the mail last week. When I was contacted for my address, I admit I had forgotten about signing up for this bookring! It arrived somewhat damp, but it is still in decent reading condition. I will try to get this one in rotation as my bus book, but with the semester well underway it may be slow going for a bit.
