The sequel to Angela's Ashes.

That's your dream out now. That's what my mother would say when we were children in Ireland and a dream we had came true. The one I had over and over was where I sailed into New York Harbor awed by the skyscrapers before me. I'd tell my brothers and they'd envy me for having spend a night in America till they began to claim they'd had that dream, too.

I found this book in my mail today when I came back from a short holiday. Thank you WhiteDwarfStar! It's because of people like you that I like bookcrossing so much!

Finally the long promised journal entry with my opinion on this book.

Naturally this book isn't as impressive as Angela's Ashes. Actually not worse but still not as impressive, I think because I knew a lot more about America in the 50s and 60s than about Ireland in the 40s. On the other hand I think, that this book is the more personal account, maybe because the guy McCourt is writing about is closer to his nowadays personality.
The divisions or borders across the American society (or societies?) become quite clear in this book. Not only the well-known one between black and white but also between the different ethnic, religious or social groups. He describes them in a very vivid way, not only when it concerns him but also for example when he talks about his class of grown-up women, about his military service in Germany or about his visits in Ireland years after he left.

Once again: Thank you, WhiteDwarfStar, for sending me this book! I already had a look on the Wish-Lists and found someone I'll try to send this book to.

Thanks so much for this generous RABCK! It'll probably take me a while to read it, though - several bookrings arrived at the same time plus it was my birthday last week (it almost goes without saying that I was given lots of books :)).
