When Travis McGee and his friend Meyer are returning from a hunting trip. McGee is driving Miss Agnes (his truck) through a dark backroad when a girl crosses Agnes' headlights. McGee serves, misses her and ends up in a bayou. He asks for help from a passing car and is shot at. When he reports to the local sheriff, he and Meyer are locked up and Meyer ends up beaten within an inch of his life.
