These really don't seem like children's books to me (or even young adult) - they're so dark and dense and incredibly complex - but I suppose that's what the attraction is for many of their young fans - they aren't patronised in any way reading these books. It's a long way from Harry Potter!

I'll have to find a copy of The Amber Spyglass now, and find out what happens in the end.
