I loved this book. It's wonderful creative nonfiction.
Recently I read somewhere the best nonfiction, reads like fiction,
and this book is an excellent example of that theory.
The author wove interesting tales about the book production, and these two men's lives,
and also about the origins of many words.
An engaging read for anyone who loves books and words.

Caught at the Bookcrossing Meetup.

This book accomplishes two things. It tells the story of how the Oxford English Dictionary was compiled. It also tells the dramatic story of a madman who helped in that work while he was hospitalized after committing murder. The previous poster's comment about the best nonfiction reading like fiction was right on-target for this book.

This book inspired me to read Joshua Kendall's 'Love, Death, Madness, and the Creation of Roget's Thesaurus.' The two books on the making of the English language's greatest tools make an interesting read in parallel.

What a suprising and engaging read. The story hardly seems like one that would make a full-length book but the diversions and details are all fascinating. The author clearly loves his subject and made me love it as well.

I picked this up at Cambridge Book Crossers meeting. It got got good reviews from other club members. Overall, I enjoyed reading it. I thought in place the author was spelling out to much, rather than letting the reader to use her imagination or see for herself the ironies.
