I read this while studying Literature at University, on a course about American Lit. As a pacifist I was wary of it - its about US soldiers in Vietnam. But I was completely blown away by it (no pun intended). O'Brien writes poetically, very movingly, about the trauma of war. His style and his subject matter grabbed me by the heartstrings and I really felt compassion for the young men drafted into the violence and cruelty of combat. It is one of those rare books that actually changed my perspective on life.

What to say... A very dense book, tough to bear sometimes, but so real that you could nearly feel you were fighting side by side with those guys... And, my God, it's so sad to see how little we've learnt from that war and how we seem to be stuck in a vicious circle of violence and hatred... Well, he wisely wrote:

"The bad stuff never stops happening: it lives in its own dimension, replaying itself over and over"

Maybe it didn't change my perspective on life, as it happened to gaelpixie, must it struck me a lot indeed, and maybe opened an eye that somebody or something had turned blind before.

"The thing about remembering is that you don't forget. You take your material where you find it, which is in your life, at the intersection of past and present"

... A few, simple, words for a huge, complex, truth...
