This arrived safely yesterday. Oh my goodness, it's the biggest book I've seen in my life! Thanks for sending on, and thanks for the chocolate rahar109, should keep my strength up as I read!

This was fantastic. The fact that the length of the book (about 900 pages) didn't have me flagging has to be a testimony to good writing. Great characters and story, and not predictable. Wally Lamb is such a good writer. Thanks so much for being willing to trade this rahar109!

I can't say too much about this novel without ruining it for its future readers!
An epic 900 page novel, but well worth the effort, not that much effort was actually required! It tells the story of a period in the life of Dominick Birdsey and his schizophrenic twin brother Thomas. Dominick loves his brother but feels he has always had to carry the burden of his care, but when TYhomas commits an outrageous act, life starts to fall apart. interlaced with Dominick's present and past memories is the memoir of his grandfather, which both shocks and helps Dominick to come to terms with his complicated self.
Richly written and with stunningly well-drawn characters, this is a book that will stay in my mind for some time yet. Don't be daunted by the thickness of it - it will draw you in and keep you there till the bitter end.
Thank you so much for giving me the chance to read this wonderful book. It deservces more readers so I'm going to take it along to the BCUK Cherry Tree meet later on today.

Thanks to Chelseagirl for sending it to me. I'm looking forward to reading it :-)

Journal Entry 10 by LindyB28 from Acocks Green, West Midlands United Kingdom on Saturday, December 10, 2005
An exhausting, moving, and wonderful read. It requires commitment from the reader (at about 900 pages) but that commitment is rewarded by a narrative which provides an experience which will change you and challenge your assumptions about mental illness, family life and, I suppose, what it means fully to be human.
Thanks to Chelseagirl for sending it to me... I am going to do my best to find another reader (s) for this fantastic book.

This arrived today, thanks Katisha and thanks for the choccie to sustain me. I will certainly need it for such a big book. I am currently reading a big book but will try and be as quick as I can.

I just couldn't get in to this. Too much jumping across the times. I managed 200 pages and gave up. I think this is the first book I have ever started and not finished.
I will send it on to sunflowergirl.
I will send it on to sunflowergirl.

I received this book about 5 minutes ago! I've had three book rings arrive this week so I may be a little while getting to this one, I'll read it as soon as I can though.
Thanks katisha50 for letting me join the ring, and dolph1n for passing the book on to me.
Thanks katisha50 for letting me join the ring, and dolph1n for passing the book on to me.

I started reading this book on Tuesday and have barely been able to put it down since. I've just this minute finished reading it and all I can think of to say is "wow!". This was the best book I've read in a long time and the story will stay with me for a good while. In fact I think I will buy my own copy of this book at some point so that I can read it again. I very quickly became utterly absorbed in Dominick's life, he seemed so real to me.
I lost my soul mate, it'll be the anniverary of her death on Tuesday and I still miss her. People have said to me since she died that I seem very much like my old self and her self combined into one person, so the ending of this book really moved me.
I feel quite bereft at finishing the book. I've read it at every single opportunity as I was desperate to know what happened next, but now I wish I could have had more patience and savoured it more. (But then, that's not in my nature - when I love a book I cannot put it down!)
I am rating this book 10/10 and it's very rare for me to do that. I'm one of those people who keeps the ten stars for my absolute favourite books. This book is now one of them, I adored it.
Thank you so much for giving me the chance to read it.
* * * Ozone-nut asked to be skipped as she's now got her own copy of this book. I've already PM'd scotsbookie and received her address so I'll post the book on as soon as I can. * * *

I'll be posting this book on to the next reader tomorrow afternoon.

Arrived this morning, thank you sunflowergirl. I'm reading a 492 page book at the moment & this will be up next.

This was a fantastic read, I hardly noticed the length of the book. Beautifully written characters with a narritave that never let up or let down.
I have PM'd Kitkat8 for her details.

This arrived with me in the post this morning. I am looking forward to reading this, but have a couple of other rings ahead of this one.

Journal Entry 22 by riverwillow from Beckenham, Greater London United Kingdom on Monday, July 24, 2006
I just wanted to apologise to everyone on this ring, I've just started a new job and life has been a little crazy over the last couple of weeks, I also had a couple of other rings ahead of this one. The good news is that I started reading this book on the way to work this morning and am enjoying it very much so far.

Journal Entry 23 by riverwillow from Beckenham, Greater London United Kingdom on Saturday, July 29, 2006
Thank you Katisha50 for arranging this ring as this is an amazing book. I have been so moved by the writing and can hardly believe that Dominick is a fictional character as his struggles felt so real. This is a very powerful piece of fiction that I highly recommend and have to give 10 out of 10 to. Now I am off to find more works by Wally Lamb.
Am PM'ing aubriel now to keep this wonderful ring moving,

Just to apologise again, life is fairly busy and I was convinced that I had sent this book onto aubriel, but I was sorting through a pile of books and found this book lurking at the bottom, but it is now safely on its way to aubriel.

Journal Entry 25 by aubriel from Sheffield, South Yorkshire United Kingdom on Friday, August 25, 2006
Arrived safely this morning, but I've a couple of books to read before I get to this one.
Thanks!
Thanks!

For a novel this is a long book and I have to confess I had my misgivings about finding the time to read it. However, it is very readable and worth the effort of taking so much time on one book.
Posting on to CaterinaAnna.

Didn't realise when I signed up that it was quite so thick!!!
Still half term coming up ...

Yes, that is a ten and they don't come from me often.
I know what all those reviewers mean when they talk about powerful writing now: right from the first few chapters I could feel what Domenick was feeling - OK there was still that omnipotent reader perspective of knowing him better than he knew himself, but for once that led to sympathy rather than disdain.
Going straight on my Wish List 2 for all the reasons everyone else has said.
Thank you so much to rahar for starting it on its travels and katisha for organising the ring.
Will get straight on its way to candy-is-dandy (are we sharing as many rings as LyzeeBee and Heaven-Ali do you think?)

I have been very bad and held onto this ring for much too long. Though I would like to read it some time I have had to admit to myself that I'm not going to get to it soon and it's high time I moved it on again. Sorry katisha50, and all other journallers, for delaying this ring. It is now off to kazbag as heaven-ali no longer wants it.

Journal Entry 32 by kazbag from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Wednesday, January 16, 2008
Whoops! Just found this in a pile of stuff on my landing when I was tidying up so my gasfitter could do some work for me! Many apologies for not having journalled it sooner.I'll start reading it asap!

Excellent book. Now on its way to tutleymutley .

Journal Entry 34 by tutleymutley from Newton Abbot, Devon United Kingdom on Monday, September 1, 2008
Got this but a couple of weeks ago and couldn't put it down - not even to log it's arrival (oops, sorry!). I've given it 10/10 (which I rarely do!) - as I loved it so much. I devoured it, I read it everywhere and anywhere ~
What a story. Lamb examines twindom, politics, religion, sex, race, mental health, therapy (I wish I had a DR Patel to turn to!) love, life, - oh, everything comes into this epic. I've neglected everything to read it and I've just come up for air.
This is the second Wally Lamb book I've read - my m-i-l gave me "She's Come Undone" over 20years ago and I remember enjoying that one too. Did you know he's got a new book coming out in November 2008? That one's only 800 pages too. Can't wait. Now - what do you want me to do with this wonderful book? as I'm the last one on the list... D'you want it back katisha50, or do you want to change your mind candy-is-dandy?
