Sad True story- you have to keep reminding yourself that it is from real life and not fiction.

Received from fellow bookcrosser. Looking forward to reading it.
An easy read in that it's short and quick but a very tough read in that it can be quite traumatic. It's an honest account of one man's experience of physical and psychological abuse as a child when his mother starved and beat him and devised increasingly crazy and cruel games. The oddest things about it are that 1. his father knows what's going on but is too cowardly to stop it and 2. David is one of five brothers and the others don't seem to get picked on in the way he does. From these aspects it's a fascinating book.
I found I could muster absolutely no sympathy for his drunken, clearly unhinged mother (though I honestly tried) and little for his weak father or brainwashed brothers. I just wanted him to get out of there and get revenge.
So, apart from being upsetting and apart from the annoying 'isn't America great and wasn't I lucky to survive and serve my country in the Air Force' bit at the end this was a good read. And very important. I encourage more people to read this in the hopes that they have a better understanding of child abuse.
