I picked this up at the library sell-out, but the book is brand new. On the back cover:
"Welcome to the Land of the Free and the Home of TV" - Sometimes Alfredo thought of it as the holy vowel. It bothered him a little that, because he'd never gone to school, he wasn't sure what a vowel really was. But he'd seen how desirable a vowel always was on 'Wheels of Fortune', and how frequently the possession of vowels resulted in new cars, so he knew there were few things on Earth as precious. And now he was in America, the land of the vowels.

Now doesn't that sound like a fun read?

And indeed it was. A little curious and absurd, but highly amusing and readable. The story about Alfredo and his grasp of American culture develops itself, seen mainly through the eyes of Eva, a worried eleven-year old in the neighbourhood, who is the first one to discover Alfredo hiding in the desolated warlock house in the woods. Eva worries about her parents, about rampant teenage boys and about the existence of God and the purpose of praying.
