I thought this book was brilliant. It describes the progress of a particular artistic circle arriving in New York and trying to make it big in the 1980s, a time of wild excess and frivolity. The shadow of AIDS falls across these gifted people's charmed lives, and the book is narrated by Hartley Mims, the sole survivor, attempting to make sense of the magnitude of this horrible disease. It's funny and touching and has some beautiful poetic moments. You really feel for the characters. I would love to read more books by Gurganus.

Freesia left this book at my place to be dropped off at the OCZ when I'm next over there.
