This is a modern classic, Fowles' first novel and easily his best, so lacking the pretension of his later work.
The abduction plot is original, simple, and besutifully executed. The narrative is in two halves, written from the viewpoint first of abductor, then of abductee. Dazzling.

Received this today in a surprise parcel from the lovely Judio. Extra excited to note it originated from my favourite 'troll'!
I read The Magus 5 years ago and look forward to discovering more of Fowles' work.

I loved this story when I first read it over 30 years ago, and it stood up well to a second read. Very creepy story of a disturbed young man who wins money to allow him to try to make his fantasy come true.
And wow, isn't this a well travelled book! If only they could earn frequent flyer points.
