The queen and I
3 journalers for this copy...
I've just read this book for the 2nd time (first time some 15 years ago) and still think it's brilliant. It's going into my PC now but anybody who's interested is welcome to read and return.
The back says:
"A Times leader calls for the dismantling of the monarchy, and a week later it comes to pass. A Republican government wins the election in 1992, and overnight the Royal Family is stripped of its regal underpinnings and dispatched by the new Prime Minister...to live in a hellhole council estate in the Midlands. I can think of no author who could imagine this outrage so graphically, demolish the institution so wittily and yet leave the family with its human dignity intact, as Sue Townsend has. -- Valerie Grove, The Times"
"Certianly the most absorbing, entertaining and escapist, the funniest thing in print since Adrian Mole. -- Ruth Rendell, Daily Telegraph"
"Full of sharp-eyed delicious sentimentality...the hero of The Queen and I is not the royal family but poverty...a best-selling account of how bad things really are at the other end of the carpet... -- Antony Barnett, The Guardian"

Just been returned to me again from a non-bookcrossing friend who loved it as much as I do. As she put it, it had her in fits of laughter!
This looks like a lot of fun, thanks coolbox!
Quick and amusing read. I particularly liked the image of Prince Charles (Charlie Teck) in a pony tail and shell suit.
Returned to me at Chertsey Bookcrossers' Meeting tonight.
Came in the mail from England.
Cute little tale about what might happen if the Monarchy was ended in the UK and the Queen went into public housing.
