Every year towards the end of summer the SS Narcissus sets sail from Cannes harbour on a luxurious Mediterranean cruise. Aboard this floating paradise the hedonistic passengers are entertained nightly by a virtuoso concert pianist, the irascible and conceited Hans-Helmut Kreuze, and a celebrated opera singer, the incomparable Doriacci.
Thirty years ago these two were lovers but la Doriacci now has a penchant for young men - and the joy of growing older as far as she is concerned, is their ever-increasing number.

The Painted Lady is both a marvellous comedy of manners and a magical love story. To the freshness of her early work Francoise Sagan has brought the experience of her turbulent life - and the combination is masterly.
