Journal Entry 3 by KiwiWonder from Auckland, Auckland Province New Zealand on Monday, December 26, 2005
Received months ago but didn't realise I had never journalled it until I went to look for it on my TBR shelf!
Anyhow, have finally gotten around to reading it, with mixed opinions. I found it extremely slow to start (especially for chick-lit, which usually picks up quicker) and highly predictable at points. Also wasn't extremely original, as parts sounded like the shop-a-holic series. That said, there were a few interesting plot twists and turns that I *didn't* forsee, so the book isn't completely without merit. And I really liked the ending, which always adds to a book's "score"; the ending was both plausible and (as to be expected) happy, without being trite or overly cliched.
On the other hand, the book is probably 50-70 pages longer than it needs to be, as there was quite a bit of backstory that really wasn't necessary and even felt like 'filler' when reading it. Granted, *some* backstory was needed (telling of mother's death, or establishing father's character, etc) but there were at least 3 too many 'when 11 years old at camp...' stories that often involved whole (tho usually brief) chapters, and the occasional switch to second-person point of view was unneccassary and slightly jarring. (I understand that it was there to tell about the episode from a seemingly objective viewpoint, but didn't flow smoothly with the rest of the novel and could have been relayed in other means.)
Overall verdict -- I'd reccomend it to fans of chick-lit and to people who don't mind waiting 70 pages or so to get interested in the story and/or characters, and definitely to fans of reality TV. I'm glad I finished the book rather than giving up on it, but can also see how others wouldn't.
