Bought this from the local op shop for 20 cents! - actually another lady I know had bought it but said she was going to take it back to the op shop once she'd read it....so I ALSO paid my 20 cents to the cashier and asked the lady to give it to me direct when she'd finished! So today she passed it over! :-)

Registered as part of the "RACE TO 2 MILLION BOOKS" CHALLENGE!

Picture shown here in journal differs from that on front cover.

"When dowdy housewife Evelyn Couch meets endearing old lady Ninny Threadgoode, she shares with her an enthralling story of two women. The headstrong Idgie and the gentle Ruth who in the 1930's ran the Whistle Stop Cafe, a railside eatery offering great barbecues, tasty fried green tomatoes, and all kinds of love, laughter and even an occasional murder."

Reserved for MadamMuck as a RABCK in honour of my First BC Anniversary. I did a 'draw' and pulled MadamMuck's name from the hat! :-) So I will bump this to the top of Mount TBR and read it and get it to her 'ASAP' :-)

A very enjoyable book! There were a couple of brief passages I wouldn't want my 82 year old mother to read but apart from them it's a fantastic book, easy to read and it will leave an impression on your soul for years to come. (OK, so I only finished reading it today so maybe that last comment it a bit presumptive but I think I'll remember this book fondly for quite some time!)

The book tells the story of the residents of a small rural 'whistle stop' town in the USA. It is written in short chapters that are quick to zip through and held the story unfold bit by bit. Basically the story is the reminicent memories of any elderly lady in a Nursing home, who chats almost non-stop to a younger lady who happened to sit down next to her in a waiting room. Her memories of growing up in Whistle Stop tell the story of the local Cafe, run by 2 women, the beautiful Ruth and the tomboy-ish Idgie, the culture of the times, with racism towards the negroes, the odd murder or two and other small town shenanigans!

I hope future readers enjoy this as much as I did!

Wow it doesnt rain it pours.....but what great "rain". Got home after a very stressful day of work and trying to find my sisters dog (who ran away). To find a little mountain of books from beautiful BookCrossers.

I remember seeing the movie for this one a while ago and being stoked because I shared my name with Ruth. Cant wait to get to this one and pass it around.

Thank you so much Mim.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I don't think I was in the mood for this when I started to read it but once I did I got caught up in the characters and I couldn't wait to pick the book up again to continue.

I thought the way that the love and special bond between Ruth & Idgie was dealt with very well, even when the freestyle Idgie had to get away and "get space".

This book reminded me that whilst Grandma (probably a lot of Grandma's) can be frustrating, the stories that they have to tell are there for the telling/hearing if only we could make the time in our busy lives.

Oh, I also wonder what on earth a Green Tomatoe is, is it just an unripe Red one or is it something different, think I will have to go and ask my local greengrocer about that one.

Thanks again Mim, will find another willing receipient soon.

I received this on Tuesday (sorry I took a little while to register it!) and am already halfway through it. I love it already. I was pretty sure the book was going to be good when I saw the Harper Lee (To Kill A Mockingbird) endorsement on the front cover. Can't wait to finish it. What a lovely surprise. Thank you MadamMuck!!

I loved this book! Someone said in an earlier journal that it will leave an impression on your soul - absolutely! This is one of those books that you think will be a 'nice' read but it just takes your heart and holds it. This is one of my top 2 reads for the year and I have read some great books, a lot of classics, this year. All the characters were so real to me, the author was, in my opinion, masterful.
I took this book on holiday with me because I couldn't bear to not read it for two weeks. I tried desperately to finish it so I could pass it on to some of our NT members but wasn't able to finish it in time.
I hired the movie the day after finishing the novel because it was one of those books I couldn't bear to finish (you know, you want to get to the end but you don't want to too!). Ofcourse the movie was a disappointment - in comparison.
I know I've harped on but I just GOT this book and I love it when I find something like that. I will look to see if someone else has this on their wishlist.
Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to read it - I'm now a fan.

I am SOOO sorry I have held onto this book for so long. I thought I had passed it on but came across it the other day. I have PM'd someone who had it on their wishlist so hopefully I will be sending it onto them...shhh!!! They don't know which book I'm sending. Although, here's a clue for those who have already read it. This book has gone from SA to QLD to SA...what's the next logical location?? :-)

I received this in the mail today, when I got back to work. (Receiving books in the mail makes going back after holidays just a little more bearable) I've just read all the journal entries and am looking forward to reading this book. I now have high expectations. I think this book ended up on my wish list as it was listed in the BookCrossing Top 100. Yep I'm a Qld'er! Thankyou for thinking of me and sending it.
